This is volume five in the English Cathedral Series which is all we need to say. Those who do not enjoy organ music need read no further and those who do can be assured that this addition is as good as the first four. The selection of material is more eclectic than the earlier ones in that it is difficult to find a unifying theme, other than most of the composers were also organists and two – Percy Whitlock and Charles Hylton Stewart – are, like David Poulter, former holders of the post at Rochester Cathedral. I particularly enjoyed some of the contrasts in this collection. For example, tracks seven to nine (out of 15) are “Partita on De Lofzang van Maria” by the Dutch composer and organist Piet Post, followed by Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Rhosymedre” and then Norman Cocker’s “Tuba Tune”. However, if I had to pick a favourite it would be Rawsthorne’s arrangement of Purcell’s rousing “Trumpet Tune And Air”.
