'Destiny's Child' is the debut from the hugely successful R&B divas who, in some ways, occupy a similar place to the UK's Eternal. They work in the mainstream but some band members profess Christian faith and there is the occasional spiritual reference in their songs. Like Eternal, there's been controversy within Christian circles with comments about the band's sometime scanty clothing and the 'Are they? Aren't they?' discussions following their appearance on label-mates Mary Mary's debut and a recent appearance on the soundtrack to His Woman, His Wife. Like Eternal, there have also been a few personnel changes with two of the members of the band featured on this album no longer in the line up. So what about the music? Recorded in 1998, when the members of the band were 18 years old, there's no argument that this is stonking, top quality chart bound R&B. It drips with all the hallmarks of the '90s version of the genre - funky beats, tight harmonies, some hip hop influences and lyrics focussed on relationships, finding romance, etc. Those seeking anything more spiritual will be disappointed! Undoubtedly great R&B though including their debut hit 'No, No, No!' and some tasty contributions from Wyclef Jean.
