Even for an avowed organ hater like myself, Buxtehude manages to make the instrument sing with his sparkling and textured counterpoint and huge arsenal of sound. His pieces for Epiphany (Christmas) are played by Spang-Hanssen with a great deal of confidence and style. You certainly need the former; with so many exponents of baroque music around who will tell you if someone who does it better. What the heck, if it sounds good, to my way of thinking, it is good and I was thoroughly impressed by this interpretation of some 15 works by the composer. I found it interesting to listen to the "Prelude In D Minor", bearing in mind the famous "Toccata And Fuge In D Minor" by Bach, and note the similarities and differences. All of the works presented here demonstrate a composer at the height of his powers and they are as relevant today as the moment they were penned.
