Eric, the song of ''60s folkster Leon, has, like his father, found his niche amongst blues and folk devotees. But this new set shows Eric to be a convincing purveyor of gospel music too. Recorded in Nashville and completed in Stockholm, 'Get Onboard' features some sympathetic production from Glen Scott and an all star band featuring such players as Danny Thompson, Trevor Hutchinson and, on the delicious "If Our Hearts Ain't In It", the searing slide guitar of Bonnie Raitt. Songs like "The Promised Land" and "Deep In My Soul" are powerful evocations of faith while the duet with Ruthie Foster on the song "Conversation" has surely to be one of the best things Eric has ever recorded. A lot of music these days claims to be timeless but the blues gospel gumbo cooked up by these old hands is truly outside the vagaries of fashion.
