The cut "I Found Forever" with its medieval style melody is a ringer for classic Led Zepp while elsewhere a whole range of influences blast through. One moment Fighting Instincts resemble the classic rock bands like Boston, the next, post-grunge acts like Creed or Staind. But amazing this team retain an aura of freshness about all they do. There are literally hundreds of edgy, guitar-driven bands vying for the CD buyer's attention but this striking debut from the North Carolina band is never less than engaging. The strident vocals bite through the southern fried riffs and muscular production. An aside here; throughout studio whiz Skidd Mills (Three Doors Down, Skillet) brings out the best from the band. Listen to the way the scorching diddley diddley solo on "Back To You" immediately cuts away to a heavily treated vocal chorus (it's amazing what you can do with Pro Tools these days). So if you're looking for a modern rock band with a sense of history but one that never resorts to mere retro cloning, check out this gutsy three piece. It'll be worth the investment.
