With a name like Great Wind Sounds Of Trumpets this reviewer expected an instrumental ensemble. In fact, GWSOT are a gospel vocal group from Waterbury, Connecticut, who describe their music as "new traditional praise". What they mean by such a term is that they have updated the quartet sound of the '50s with a production which falls short of the modern sound of urban gospel and has the distinctly retro feel of '60s soul music. For that to work one would have needed a far more expensive production than what is evident here and though Victor Starkes does a sterling job on the synths to reproduce Motownesque horn lines and lush string arrangements the overall feel is decidedly low budget. Having said all that, what lifts this album is the exceptional soul power of GWSOT's lead singer Caroll N Martin. His gritty, rasping, hugely emotive voice lifts every song he touches and with most of these songs, penned by Mr Martin as well, it's a pretty impressive display of musical talent. The killer cut is "Show Me The Way" which after a sermonette ("No matter what you're going through in life you can always call on the Lord") goes into a piece of sonorous deep soul of real power.
