Excellent sales of albums don't necessarily indicate artistic excellence. Take for instance this ongoing series of albums which have sold around 120,000 in total in UK Christian retail. Production by Chris Norton and Phil Le Cheminant is competent enough, James Oliver (yep, the Cross Rhythms reviewer) brought in Buxton's New Life Christian Fellowship to do the congregational bit and the lead singers here - Ingrid Du Mosch, Brent Miller, Brad Russell, Karen Lebrecht, Krissy Nordhoff, Wendy Green and Andy Green - sing with ability if not particular distinctiveness. But this album, like its predecessors, sells not because of the recorded performances but because people hear songs like Paul Baloche's "Who Is Like Him", Matt Redman's "Holy Moment", Nathan Fellingham's "Awake Awake O Zion" and Michael W Smith's "Agnus Dei" and rather than searching out the original source albums, content themselves with a double CD of cover versions. Fair enough I suppose though inevitably the covers aren't in the same class as the originals.
