Howard Skempton is best known for his quirky compositions for accordion or solo piano but has in recent years developed an interest in choral music. The 27 tracks on this CD constitute a broad survey of the composer's work over the last quarter of a century. 27 pieces in a generous 71 minutes show us that Skempton likes to make his point and then move quickly on. Brevity is often to be applauded in instrumental recitals but some of these vocal pieces leave us wanting more. The Chinese meal illustration comes to mind here: our first glance at the menu suggests a veritable banquet but as each course comes and goes we enjoy the different flavours but are left less than satisfied at the conclusion. The "Missa Brevis" composed for this disc is too brief for my tastes but several of the songs are very enjoyable and remind this reviewer of Benjamin Britten. Matthew Owens and The Exon Singers are superb and anyone with any interest in contemporary choral music needs to make their acquaintance at the earliest opportunity. Whether this disc is the best introduction depends on your own taste. Listeners who enjoy music that goes its own way will enjoy taking a journey with Howard Skempton; those who prefer a more traditional path should try to listen before buying.
