Once you get past the power chords and slightly cheesy edge you will find that 'Rock Of Ages' has put together some surprisingly successful rock versions of modern worship songs. There is an excellent variety of songs, from different vocalists and the smooth, clinical production by Rob Hawkins (who produced Firelight's 'Unbreakable') gives the album real credibility. The chord progressions and harmonic arrangements help to elevate the songs out of their usual formats like the well known, "Mighty To Save" and as the listener you forget the original versions. However, the real strength of the album is that it doesn't just sound like a random collection of worship songs, but a standalone piece you can listen to from beginning to end. This is mainly due to the range of songs from the piano-led ballad, "The Motions," with the rousing, let's not die wondering lyric ("I don't want to spend my whole life asking, what if I had given everything?") to the slightly funky "You're Worthy Of My Praise" (originally recorded by Jeremy Camp). Caitlin Evanson's vocal (reminiscent of Amy Lee from Evanescence) on Laura Story's "Indescribable" works a treat and is underpinned by a strong string section. Overall, it's a well executed album for worshippers with rock music tastes.
