Back in the early years of recording urban areas like Atlanta and Birmingham acted as magnets for blues, jazz and gospel performers and this CD is a fascinating look at some of the obscurer pre-war artists. Blues singers Julius Daniels, George Carter and Lily May all recorded some stirring stuff but it's songster Lil' McClintock, recorded in 1930, who is the source of interest here for Cross Rhythms readers. He cut two secular blues, a rag and two gospel songs, one of which "Mother Called Her Child To Her Dying Bed" is an absolute gem.
