Not a style extensively featured in the pages of this magazine, but nonetheless one which has had a vital influence on many in the UK Christian music scene and which, looking at the rather elderly faces of the choir featured on the CD cover, may sadly be on the decline. Far from being just a Welsh phenomenon, the Male Voice Praise movement was founded in 1934 by James McRoberts of Glasgow during the dark years of economic depression. There are still over 100 choirs in the movement but unfortunately no credits are given on any of these 29 tracks so I have no idea if this is a compilation from other albums, a collection of previously unreleased tracks or a specially recorded album - a shame if anyone wants to follow it up. Some are unaccompanied voice in the traditional style but I particularly enjoyed the rousing hymns such as "Praise My Soul" and "Crown Him With Many Crowns" accompanied by piano or pipe organ. An album which captures the emotion and passion of this unique part of our nation's rich Christian musical heritage.
