Down the years the Christian record companies have flooded the bookshops with CDs with titles like 'Praise Him On The Classical Guitar' and 'Instrumental Hymns' and, in truth, many have been dull as dishwater. But this seven-track mini-album from an Oregon-based guitarist, brings new life to the meditative music formula. For a start, Mr Farley is a fine musician able to pick intricate patterns on his acoustic while surrounded by some expert musicians (violinist Crystal Reeves and whistle/recorder player Pat O'Scannell are particularly outstanding). Secondly, as well as evergreens from the hymnals like "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Be Thou My Vision" there are also a couple of fine Farley originals. The title track is beautiful and "Paradise And Passion" - despite being rather out of place amongst the gentle music here - is, with its complex mix of country, blues and even a touch of rock, a tour de force which suggests a musician with the ability to play in any style. One of the best instrumental projects I've heard for a long while.
