This live recording of never-before-heard material from the legendary bluesman comes 38 years after Fred's death. Originating in northern Mississippi, McDowell's particular brand of raw, country blues is in many ways closer to its African roots than other later styles and in terms of influence one can hear echoes of the likes of Robert Johnson in his playing. 18 tracks of McDowell's gutsy, declamatory blues were recorded in 1967 at the home of an unidentified friend, whose vocals can be heard on several tracks, actually taking the lead on "Dream I Went To The UN". The power and impact of McDowell's studio recordings may be lacking here, but the raw intimacy of the recording goes some way to make up for this. Some impressive bottleneck work, coupled with a deep and powerful vocal line, comes together to form an almost mesmerising ambience. A wide variety of subjects are dealt with lyrically, with the significance of the writer's faith becoming more apparent towards the end of the album. All in all, a fascinating insight into the later career of a blues giant.
