In the rock world live recordings generally sell very few copies and are reckoned to be produced only as souvenirs for people who were present at the concert. Likewise, pleasant though this recording is, I can't think that it will appeal to many more than those who were present at the recital in St James's Piccadilly on 20 June 1993. The music is performed skilfully enough, and the recording is okay, but the applause at the end of each piece makes the whole thing sound like a Radio Three outside broadcast - fine on Radio Three but would you actually want to buy one? Of the programme, I enjoyed the Haydn and the Grieg but the Nordheim was harder work. Who's Nordheim/Norheim? (Both spellings appear on the sleeve.) He's one of the dozen Norwegian composers whose work the string quartet are trying to popularise on their travels.
