Looking back at previous reviews of releases by the Choir of Queen's College, Oxford I have always applauded the singing but have, at times, had reservations about the programme. So here we go again: the singing is first class and the acoustic at Merton College Chapel, just a short walk from Queen's, suits the vocal blend so no complaints about the performance, which includes the contributions of Organ Scholars Rudyard Cook and Arthur Barton who between them are heard on six of the 16 tracks. As to the content, 'The Crown Of Life' is another in the continuing series exploring overlooked repertoire in 20th century English choral music under the direction of Owen Rees. The centrepiece is the first recording of Kenneth Leighton's 'Missa Christi' from 1988, the year of his death (he was born in 1929). This is the composer's final large-scale sacred work, commissioned by Christ Church Cathedral, Indianapolis. Also featured are premiere recordings of 'Blessed is the man that endureth temptation' by Harold Darke (1888-1976) and 'Out of your sleep arise and wake' by Imogen Holst (1907-1984). Works by Rebecca Clarke (1886-1979) and Gustav Holst (1874-1934) complete the programme which offers a varied portrait of composers linked by studying under Charles Stanford and united in their desire to explore sacred themes. It has to be said that some music, even by well-respected composers, remains unrecorded for a reason: not everything buried is treasure. However, that would be harsh when said of this programme. Parts of Leighton's Mass are well worth hearing and there is nothing that made me reach for the skip button on my CD player. Choir leaders looking for something new may well get some good ideas from this release.
