The book's subhead is Favourite Hymns And Their Stories. Peter Harvey, aided by a survey identifying the 20 most popular hymns in Britain, sets out to tell the stories of around 50 or so hymns. "Stories" probably isn't always the right word for though there are some riveting tales here there are other instances when we are offered mere biographic notes on the writers. But there's still much useful research here.
