If you read the credits from your average US R&B band you’ll probably hear that their background or foundation has been in the Church. No different here as Prymary Colorz burst onto the scene with their debut release, which has reached number one in the US Billboard R&B charts. Their sound, well they are produced by a number of producers, including Rod Wilson, John & Dino Elefante and probably most notably by the “Darkchild”, aka, Rodney Jerkins, who adds his distinctive touch on a couple of tracks, the up-tempo opening “If You Only Knew” and the “can you bounce to it” track four, “I’ll Never Give Up”. The album is a good mix of R&B, soul and pop, which wouldn’t be out of place on the likes of TOTP or MTV. Arguably more tailored to a US market they could do equally well in the UK with the right promotion. Their sound could be compared to the likes of Winans Phase 2 or even the Katinas (dare I say Boyz 2 Men in places) but in my opinion they certainly shouldn’t be marketed as a gospel group – inspirational group, yes. Is this important? I have my own views but leave you to decide for yourself. As an R&B group they certainly have the potential to go far, and I wish them well. In the UK market they’ll need to be promoted as such and certainly not as a gospel group, because for me I don’t think it’ll work. I may have to eat my words, but let’s see at the end of the year.
