This CD features one of the longest established traditions-of the UK evangelical Christian music scene. James McRoberts probably had little idea when he drew men together to sing the gospel in 1934 of the longevity and impact of the movement. The founder's aim to keep the music "studiously simple and direct" is a nice way of saying that for those who appreciate the fine craftsmanship and expertise of quality choral singing there is little here to admire and nothing to learn from. The power in evidence comes from sheer weight of numbers rather than skilled use of relevant techniques. The 24 standards such as "Come Over Into Canaan Land", "Worthy The Lamb" and "Burdens Are Lifted At Calvary". This is the honest, sincere but rather rough and basic sound of men praising God to the best of their ability.

I won't pick an argument with Tony May, because likely the God-blessed, soul-heartening, tear-drawing, voice-driven music of these men is due to ". . . the honest, sincere, but rather rough and basic sound of men praising God to the best of their ability." I first heard them in 1954 at age 23 on tapes brought back from Scotland. Recordings were not available in America in the late 50s, I ordered several in 78rpm wax from Scotland. Now in my 85th year, their singing is more viable and thrilling than ever. God bless it.

The SFMVP has longevity because the Lord blesses and propogates it. The "weight of numbers" is what gives their music a witness of immense power. The men come from all walks of life and express their convictions without reservation and in concert with all believers. God bless their rich testimony.

My dad(Harry Gisby)was a founder member of the Leeds Gospel Male Voice Choir and travel the country and abroad with various choirs singing God's Praises.I went with him to many events. One stands out,we went to Carlisle and the pianist who was to play for the soloist couldn't come so I was asked, only being a young teenager to fill in.I have never been so scared, but God took hold of me and gave me the strength and courage. The choirs do a great job and it's amazing that all that is needed is a simple child like faith and accepting Jesus as your Saviour,Redemer and Friend. Keep up the good work in His Name.

Tony, You should have heard them in person as I did while attending a Baptist college in Michigan. I still tear up when listening to them. Maybe not refined as you feel but as I remember they were Christian pastors, laymen, choir directors, and youth leaders from all over Scotland. Mostly acapella to boot!! Not professional perhaps, but certainly a huge blessing in my life then and continually.

I heard these men about 55 years ago in my native New Zealand. "Whar's like 'em. Deal's the yin." To call them rough seems outrageous. I've planted churches in Japan since 1960 and had to start the hymns of course and being Brethren this was without accompaniment often. And to add to that my Mother and Aunt at different times told me not to sing in church because of my voice. "The works of God are great, sought out by all those who have pleasure therein."
I'm quite rich; it's in my name but I wonder if I could get their music free somehow?
God bless you other fans of Scottish Festivals.

PS Today (19th Feb) is my 79th birthday and God has graciously left me here with 6 children in their 40's and fifties and 13 grandchildren MORE or LESS serving the Lord in Japan. Praise to God. Pray for us please if you could,

We grew up with this music and they are the best! Try to listen to them weekly and we enjoy their CD's and Tapes from days gone bye. Long may they continue to spread the message of Jesus and His love to all who take the time to listen. Audrey & Bill

I would like to buy this music. How do I get it?

Tony May obviously does not know what good music is and what christian music should do - I grew up with this CD on the mission field with my parents; I recently got a copy of the CD from a current member of the choir and am so blessed once again to hear men lifting up their voices in praise to our Lord Jesus Christ. They sang and still sing beautifully blending voices so well and the arrangements are amazing. I for one will hope to continue to listen to and buy their "albums".
