The Silver Leaf Quartette of Norfolk had a career that lasted from 1920 through to 1979, although by the 1960s they were essentially in semi-retirement. These recordings, cut at seven separate sessions between June 1928 and March 1931 at the New York studios of Okeh Records, were the most artistically successful that they made, and whilst the quality of the cuts sound-wise is predictably lo-fi, the performances are evidence of their intrinsic expertise and their winning ways with acappella harmony. Also plainly obvious is their passion for the jubilee vocal style and their love for their Saviour. Thanks to the team at Document Records for another fascinating reissue of rare 78s.
