Youth organisation Crusaders celebrated its centenary in 2006 and celebrated with a song competition: this mini-album features the eight winning songs from the competition, sung by the writers with an uncredited band. Some of the tracks tend to wash over the listener - perhaps the production could have given more emphasis to the vocals, perhaps some tracks need stronger singers. The absence of printed lyrics doesn't help either. But there are some strong songs melodically and lyrically and your attention is rewarded. The songs include rocking praise and restful devotion, songs of repentance and compositions expressing a need for God. I hope these young people will be encouraged to keep writing songs of worship. There's more to come: In January 2007 Crusaders relaunch as Urban Saints and are also starting Rock School, a residential music and performance training project, 'one part of a larger plan to empower and develop young people in their God-given talents'. If that wasn't enough, they also plan to start an independent record label, encouraging young artists in their musical and spiritual development.
