So, it's UK hip-hop. Raw, cutting and aggressively acoustic, this relatively new group churn out 11 tracks on this intelligent debut. You can probably tell I like this project already, yet on first listen, there's not much to this album. It's tough to find many hooks or coherent melodies. But, this doesn't seem to be what this bunch of 20-somethings want. A summer's afternoon, kicking back with chilled lemonade is the setting for listening to this musical offering. The tunes simply meander along. "Rawface" pops lyrics over the funk-influenced band (all real instruments which in this day and age is a bonus!), while Funkshun scratches away in the background. My only quibbles are some of the scratching is a bit too raw and out-of-place for my liking and do we really need another, this is "real hip hop", number on a Christian record? An enjoyable listen and a new group to go and see this summer.
