Well, I suppose traditional gospel was the nearest description of what SHIR do, but they travel far beyond that with some of the most innovative music on the planet. This is their 20th Anniversary album, so they have pioneered this style of stunning six-voice acappella singing long before its current popularity. Easy to spot the would be imitators, though none get within a million miles of their incredible technique, vocal gymnastics and breathtaking percussive effects. The sound is rooted in African music and the degree of difficulty in their work defies description. These 14 tracks include vintage gospel songs "Come By Here", "In The Morning When I Rise", "Rest For The Weary" and "Run On For A Long Time", a dazzling song "A Tribute" recalling the group's rollcall of 21 members through the years and a whole string of beautiful protest type songs. Some superb material about various people and relationships complete a programme of totally compelling, magnificent vocal music.
