The traditional Catholic belief in purgatory hasn't traditionally received a good press in Protestant circles, to say the least. But it hasn't half inspired some good music, the Dream of Gerontius by Elgar is a well known example. Some more are featured on this CD which starts and ends with some Gregorian chant from the Requiem Mass and in-between features 12 tracks from such notable medieval composers as Dufay and Josquin Des Prez. All are impeccably sung by The Clerks Group, a small specialist vocal ensemble founded at Oxford University in the early 1990s. Their founder and director, Edward Wickham, is currently director of music at St Catherine's College, Cambridge. An excellent CD.
