The Glasgow Orpheus was founded in 1901 and under Hugh Robertson became a premier British choir. When Sir Hugh retired in 1951 members of the Orpheus formed Glasgow Phoenix, making this album a double anniversary celebration and a retrospective on the 'Best Of' the traditional choral repertoire, with 19 new recordings of well loved songs. If you enjoy the British choral tradition you know what to expect. One complaint: the recording (whether the acoustic in the hall, the mix, or the engineering) sounds like it has been filtered through porridge. In the 21st century sound quality should be better.
