Groups such as "Melody Four"and "The Old Fashioned Revival Hour Quartet" were called "Christian Quartets". I didn't heart the term "Southern Gospel Quartet" until the 1980s; before that groups like the Harmoneers, The Rangers, and The Blackwood Brothers, and The Golden Gate Quartet were just called "Gospel Quartets".

The Melody Four Quartet are not, nor were they ever a Southern Gospel Quartet. It would be easy to classify them that way as their sound was unique. With trained voices, their approach is more from a classical framework. I grew up knowing them to be a part of the traditional gospel music of the day. They really are without classification. The is Southern Gospel, Gospel (the music from our african-american brothers and sisters in the Lord), but no classification for groups such as the Melody Four, Hale & Wilder, Bill Pierce & Dick Anthony, Sixteen Singing Men, etc.
And I hate that people always want your e-mail! Why do you need that for a simple comment?
