The ninth release from Orkney singer/songwriter Michael Harcus is very much a family affair thanks to the involvement of wife Teenie, their grown children Matthew and Hannah and family friend/pianist Mairi Warren who all pull their weight vocally to offer up an album full of sumptuous harmonies and homely warmth. Harcus' modus operandi has always been country music and this release is no exception with the likes of "Heart Of Hearts" and "Want What You Got" - complete with some lovely pedal steel - and the bluegrass-tinged "Jesus Help Me To Stand" reflecting Harcus' longstanding connection with Nashville whilst a tender rendition of the old hymn "Nearer My God To Thee" contains a Celtic feel more akin to the group's homeland. Harcus generously ensures his family all get their chance to shine both individually and collectively but special mention must go to son Matthew whose rich tones and measured performances on hymns such as "Jesus Paid It All" and "Sweet Hour Of Prayer" are the undoubted highlights of this release. A somewhat shoehorned adaptation Dougie Maclean's timeless "Caledonia" - complete with admittedly quickly penned sanctified lyrics - misses the mark but this doesn't take away from an otherwise enjoyable and accomplished release from a talented family.
