Almost an institution in alternative Scottish Church music, the now (cheerfully) disbanded Wild Goose Worship Group (ex-members 'and other collaborators') regrouped for this eclectic venture, teaming up with the finely named Macappella - a ceilidh band who reveal their more restrained, traditional Scottish folk side on a half-dozen tracks here. The two groups are united by their connection to the Iona Community and by the fact that most tunes they play here were recently created by WGWG founder John L Bell. In their unique style, and with a regard for clairity and musical perfection, a variety of genres arise - from choral to classical ballad to acoustic folk and hymnody, and even a touch of upbeat Scottish dance! Lyrics are original and challengingly thoughtful - engaging directly and honestly with God in praise and meditation, and with real life issues such as the horrors of war and the loss of a child. The music is diverse, imaginative, melodic and uncluttered, making selective use of a range of acoustic aids; though it's ever the varied, finely-honed vocals that are to the fore. A beautiful hour-long collection and an absolute breath of fresh air amidst the standard pop and rock throb of most contemporary worship output.
