For this Tom's fifth album release, the opening lyrics of "I come into your presence, with an offering of praise" immediately registers on the cliché meter. Thankfully Tom and the band then launch into a positive upbeat song that combines elements of corporate worship, personal worship and inspirational song. The CD sleeve indicates 'Songs Of A Wilderness Traveler' is a collection of 13 songs, but hidden are tracks 14-17, alternative versions of some of the songs with a more acoustic feel. Providing backing vocals to Tom's breathy lead is Laura Fenning, who when brought to the front to sing a duet on "There Is Jesus" provides the highlight of the album. Her voice sends shivers down the spine with her simple purity of voice reminiscent of Hayley Westenra. In truth, the album would have been so much stronger if Tom's breathy vocals had played second fiddle to Laura's mesmerising voice. Still, if you're looking for well-crafted expressions of personal worship with some great lines like "You love this unholy mess" this album is worth locating.
