Connoisseurs will know this guy once cut gritty R&B for Iti Records. Now a minister, Willie offers a more traditional gospel sound while still managing to maintain a certain funkiness along the way. Some great choir arrangements and excellent vocal performances without any of that messing about with R&B stylings. Here's an album that gets back to basics with relish and there are some brilliant moments. Uplifting, encouraging lyrics abound and the duet with Harvey Watkins Jr of the Canton Spirituals sits at the centre of the album as the two men advise the listener to "Put God First". "Holy Ghost Party" is a slab of old fashioned infectious funky gospel with some great call and response vocals. Finally on a different tip, his version of the old Soul Stirrers number "That's Heaven To Me" (written by Sam Cooke) really works too. Overall, this is straight ahead gospel that doesn't disappoint.
