Psalm 37:1-4, Matthew 6:19-21, 1 Timothy 6:6-7

Do not worry about the wicked or envy those who do wrong. For like grass they soon fade away, like spring flowers they soon wither. Trust in the Lord and do good. Then you will live safely in the land and prosper. Take delight in the Lord, and He will give you your heart's desires. (Psalm 37:1-4)

What are your heart's desires?

Maybe the first thing you think of is a big house, new car, foreign holiday, big party? You wouldn't be alone. Do you ever look around and think, 'Hey, how come the wicked seem to be better off than me?' Find yourself envious?

Psalm 37 promises that if we take delight in the Lord He will give us our heart's desires.

I think this is an amazing verse, such a promise! I think too though that we can read it and limit what God promises by it by taking it to mean that if we sing some cute worship song to God or pray hard enough and smile He'll just give us the things we want (we hope!)

In my experience there is a deeper and more lasting 'heart's desire' that God wishes to give us. 'Delighting in the Lord', loving and following Him, is going to change our priorities to desire some more everlasting, eternal things.

"Don't store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be." (Matthew 6:19-21)

It's not the house, it's the home that counts...what use is it to have a mansion if it's not a place of love, safety and acceptance and other things that make a home?

God looks at our heart. Have you ever realised that God is not so interested in our comfort as He is our growth and trust in Him? Faith pleases God, but faith is only proved when it's tested. It's our heart's attitudes that are important before God, not our fashion, our 'BLING' or our stuff.

God is faithful. Whether we are currently 'walking in green pastures by still waters', or 'through the valley of the shadow of death', our Heavenly Father is faithful. He holds us in His hands, He wants us to ask and trust Him for our 'daily bread', He is the supplier of our needs for today, the 'all sufficient One'. Jesus said seek the Kingdom of God first and everything else we need will follow. Make Jesus the one you delight in and don't be taken in by the lie that getting worldly wealth will fulfil your heart's desires!

Here is a verse from the book of Timothy for us to grab hold of. Think on this today and ask God to give you His true wealth;

Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth. We brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can't take anything with us when we leave it. (1 Timothy 6:6-7)

Let us be thankful to God in all things, and always delight in Him, keeping Him as the most precious, and being content that whatever our situation we are loved by Him, forgiven by His grace, held in His hands.

May God share His richest blessings with you today, and may you recognise them as great wealth. CR
