The Armour Of God: 1. Who Do We Fight Against?
The armour of God is a very important part of prayer and essential if you are feeling serious about praying some light into a situation and some darkness out. Paul when writing about the armour of God in Ephesians 6 was thinking of a Roman solider and how they were the most effective army in the world. This was partly due to the armour they wore, which helped them to stand with confidence and might against their enemies. Just as a soldier wore a helmet, a breastplate, a belt and sandals and carries a sword and shield so as Christians we are told to put on our armour each piece representing different things. I think that the armour is very important generally as we go through life but that it is essential if we go into battle through prayer. In Ephesians 6: 12 it says:

“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood but against principalities,
against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”

Just as the Roman soldier fought against other men, we are called to fight, but not against men, against spiritual things. The bad guy in the Bible is Satan and he is not a man but a fallen angel, therefore it fits that we cannot fight him in a natural way but we need to fight him through prayer, fasting and in a persistence in our faith.
