Chicago-based Sledge has been quoted as saying that his self-titled debut album was intended as "oxygen music", giving "life, breath and hope" to R&B. As you would expect from such a gifted singer, songwriter and producer who has worked with artists from Ramsey Lewis and Yolanda Adams to Nelly and Tyrese, Aaron does not disappoint. Drawing on a wealth of musical expertise and a single-minded faith that began in childhood, Sledge has made it his mission to lead souls to Christ through "a sound and language they understand". Fans of modern R&B cannot fail to be inspired by an album which communicates truth via lyrics that are not dependent on sexual imagery and seeks to fix eyes firmly on Jesus. The album provides a good balance of up-tempo tracks and ballads. Whilst each song delivers 100% musically and spiritually, standout tracks include the opening "2nite", "Closer" and "Extra Mile" - perfect for those drivetime, windows-down moments, as well as "Did It All For Me" - a well-placed reminder of what it's all about. It is hard to fault this quality debut album that so clearly communicates the power of God's truth when encapsulated in first class R&B production.
