Classical guitarist Gary Lowry is clearly a master of his art. In this personal selection of well known hymns, songs and spirituals, Lowry has produced some fine arrangements in a variety of styles. A relaxing and simple recording, it encompasses an extremely gentle sound which belies the complexity of the playing. The tracks chosen range from a bluesy reworking of "When I Survey The Wondrous Cross" to a light-hearted version of "What A Friend We Have In Jesus", with a number of more traditional, meditative hymns thrown in for good measure. For the most part therefore, it is as applicable a score for prayerful meditation as it is for a non-Christian dinner party. However, it is perhaps in its diversity that we find the major weakness of 'Sacred Songs' - that it tries to be too many things at once. At times it is too jolly for reflection, in other moments it is too melancholy for praise. Thus in the selection of his material, Lowry has perhaps prevented this recording from being as truly awe-inspiring as it might have been. Nevertheless, the whole affair oozes quality and stands as a testament to a gifted musician clearly inspired by his God.
