'20 Gospel Greats' was the fastest selling release in the history of Cascade, so this is their second compilation of classics from the 40s, 50s and 60s. The artists may be less well known on this album, but the quality is superb. From the vaults of Modern Records, Nashboro Records and Miami-based ART records, the styles are legion - from the better known sounds of Ace regulars The Consolers and Radio Four to the acapella Echoes Of Zion, the rocking Lucille Barbee and the powerful Sister Lillie Mae Littlefield. The collection includes a tent revival meeting, with Rev C C Chapman. It concludes with an unfortunately truncated live recording of Rev G W Killens and the Mount Calvary Church in Oakland in 1947 that is a flawless lesson in church worship leading. If you have never sampled traditional gospel before, this is an excellent introduction.
