Reviewed by Chris Berry There's been something going on in Hull for a long time now. The city and surrounding area has given the pop world The House martins, Beautiful South and lately, Kingmaker. And here we have a superb showcase of the local talent on the Christian scene. The tape has got to be worth the money for the title alone. When I said I was reviewing a tape with the title it has, the editorial man for all seasons, Gavin, said "What, you mean those little furry things?", showing a clear lack of understanding of how the title must have come about. It's obvious, isn't it? Anyhow, on with the tape. Five acts all performing two songs each, and so diverse that they all deserve their individual mentions. First up are New Wine - they will transport you back to the 60s' folk-guitar sound of the Seekers and The Joy String, with "We Lift Our hearts" and "You Are My God" - lovely vocal harmonies combine to give gentle praise and worship; The Dark Horses provide two very diverse numbers which move from Joan Baez-inspired "Helpless Mothers" to male-led indie-feel, tongue-in-cheek "Alleluia Anyway", both excellent songs in their own fields; Layt, the third 'act', is billed as just 'a lot of overdubs' but works so well with "Cliffhanger" that it is almost Shadows-style; White-gold provide "I Turn My Back On You" - again 60s influenced, but more Rolling Stones oriented (circa '68) than light and "Chains Of Love" is all-girl group sound aka Supremes without Diana Ross but with Stones back-cloth; Burning Bush provide the best song on the tape with the moody, sentimental "The Stranger". But this tape is more than just a collection of 10 great tracks. It augurs well for the future of Christian music in Hull and East Yorkshire and deserves a wide audience. Now, about that title...
