This is a collaborative endeavour featuring eight indie hip-hop/R&B artists from across the United States. Produced by Julian Montgomery of GotSoul Music based in Minnesota, 'Soul Cutz Vol 2' is a compilation of stories and songs centred around worship and spiritual warfare. "He's Alive" by Soulyric featuring AP was the album's single release and whilst the passion in this record can't be faulted, the lyrics often felt cliched and uncomfortable. The message is simple, namely, people become attractive when we see Christ alive in them. However, Soulyric's performance was unhelpfully sensual and AP's cringe-worthy chat-up lines, "you are genetically made, perfect, designed in his will" distracts the listener from the song's purpose, not to mention his growling after the first verse. The neo-soul track "Lift My Hands" has a strong chorus although loses itself in the verses that lack a strong melody or lyric. Julian's first line goes "Worship is that kind of thing. . . you do. . . while on you're on your knees praying through." Except, what is it that he's praying through? He doesn't say. Tryenyse Jones is the highlight of the album on her number, "Never" featuring Godzsun. A strong vocal performance supported by wah-ing guitars and a gently drum beat. The intense "To Whom It May Concern" narrated by Mahogany Jones tells the story of a girl's broken upbringing which leads to a battle with sex, drugs and eventually a decline in her mental health where she commits suicide. It is lyrically challenging and not an easy listen. Overall, the album is overdramatic at times. A lot of the tracks feel bedroom-produced and the sounds used could better complement the vibe. Shortening them by 30 seconds could also help to maintain the listener's interest.
