And now for something quite unique. Even the veteren Larry Norman, notorious for ever releasing old songs in "new" wine skins, cannot lay claim to have released a double CD featuring TWO different recordings of the same album. That honour has fallen to his British contemporaries, the legendary, unplugged and much lamented Water Into Wine Band. Being one of a mere handful of vinyl recordings of early Jesus Music to resurface on CD is of itself an indicator of something pretty special. Indeed, the 1973 version is a joy to listen to. The three lads on guitars and vocals, abetted by violinist Bill Thorpe, ably ran through their gig list of self-penned humourous melancholy - from the classic "Stranger In The World" to the typesetter's nightmare of "I Used To Be Blind (But Now I'm Short-Sighted)". The album pleased their many fans, but not their accountants. Then fame beckoned the lads to tour America but first they had to placate Word UK's parent company. The bigwigs in Texas were less than happy with the album's production and in 1974 John Pantry was hired to produce a "sharper" recording. Having compared the pair I reckon he came up with the goods. The delightfully rambling clutter of the original metamorphosed into something far more FM radio friendly, though, wisely, the band's original arrangements were retained. Ironically, substantive rumours in recent years spoke of both versions changing hands for tidy sums across the Atlantic. Don't view this double CD release as simply a case study for student producers. Here, twice over, is timeless proof that the dawn of CCM was nothing less than brilliant.

Sample Track Listing:
1. Stranger in the World
2. I Used to be Blind (But Now I'm Short-sighted)
3. Jesus I've been Walking
4. Hill Climbing for Beginners
5. The Start of a Run
6. Song of the Cross
7. I Have Seen the Lord

Where are Water into Wine band now? I have an original 'Hill Climbing for beginners' from when I knew them, especially Ray with whom I worked, in Cambridge. They knew me as Becky Rogers. I often play it.

Hi. This message took me back to the Wonderful World of Gilbert Dodd if my increasingly shaky memory is correct. I had a dream about WIWB only last night. We were playing a gig - playing Stranger in the world. By the end of the first song the whole audience had left the room. What can this mean?
These days I play guitar for a weekly Sunday school audience, and curiously they never walk out. My latest idea is to learn mandola, and play with my daughter who is 9 and a violin freak. It can only get better.

hi becky - sorry not to remember you (my memory probably worse than ray's) but we all remember the good times and the bad times of WIWB, and memories of wonderful people we met. I'm sure you were one of them!
Cambridge in the 70s now seems a seriously long time past but it lives on inside.
These days I'm managed by wife and three kids and live in berkhamsted in hertfordshire. I've been an architect in london since leaving cambridge.
Lovely of you to drop a line - hope life is full and happy for you! peter
PS hi ray - when are we getting together again?

i'd love to grab all of the UK beat/jesus music folks together and host a re-discovery show at Greenbelt. I'm being given a pretty large stage. Would you guys be interested in helping me track some folks down?

I'm looking for a ton of beat musicians like the Joy Strings, Pilgrims, The Crossbeats, The Witnesses, etc.

Hey, what's this? An elongated reunion or what. Curiously I played the CD today, with my daughter Clare who is at Exeter University. Maybe you'll bump into her, Becky?
PS I still write music, play bass and sing (but mainly in Chamber Choirs and stuff like that)

I remember Water into Wine Band playing in Edinburgh in 1977. They musicianship and strength of the band, live, was clear.

We were your backing band, we were called Caedmon.

There's a poster from the gig on our new website www.caedmonsreturn.

I should have said 'support band' not backing band, and the link is www.caedmonsreturn.com

I heard this album in 1976, and I still have the LP I bought as soon as I could find it. The title song ends with a most profound and succinct description of grace:"And ever since the morning, there has been no right or wrong but love."
I used to love Stranger in the World-most of the lines were true of me then. I'm much less a stranger now-I have the checkbook, the car, and so many other comforts of the world. But I'm still walking in a body that I do not even own or really know. Thanks, guys, for a classic album with especially those 2 songs that still resonate deep within me.

Thanks helen. I vaguely remember playing at UEA - but it's a long time ago. I'll tell Trevor (who wrote the song) you posted your comments - I'm seeing him this evening. So nice to hear from people who remember us - love
Peter

Helen Thanks for writing. I told Trevor (who wrote the song) about your comments last night - he may add a few words to this site. So pleased you can remember the distant times - I remember (just!) playing at UEA.
Thanks again for getting in touch, hope all is well with you. Oh, and Ray (with the once long blond hair) is sixty this weekend....

I attended a WIWB gig at Pembroke College, Oxford, in Jan '75. Although I'm no Christian, I really enjoyed the gig and have their album with Stranger In The World etc. They sang two songs called Juliana (I think) and Jenny ('Jenny, you've got a place in ?Paris?...), which I've never been able to trace. Anyone know about these songs? TYVM! Mark

you'd need to ask ray about the two songs you mention - he wrote both of them but we never recorded either. juliana was one of his first songs we put together when I met him at the back end of 71 and I always liked it. I can't remember the words to Jenny! I'll try to get ray to get back to you - I can't find his email address with me at the moment. If you do get in touch at some point you'd better wish him a happy birthday as the old boy is sixty on Sun 26 April!
Kind regards
Peter
So glad you enjoyed the music! I can't remember the gig, though we played in Oxford on a number of occasions.

Thanks very very much, Peter! This has haunted me all these years, and until now WWW had not helped (as it has with much else)! Please keep me posted re Ray's email address or with the info itself! Are the songs AVAILABLE anywhere? (The song Jenny continues: 'Catch me when I'm ????? down your way...'.) Cheers! Mark

Good to know you are all about and belated Happy Birthday to Ray. One of my few claims to fame was mangling the piano part to Harvest time (I think) at Warwick Uni in about 1975 cos Bill couldn't play piano and fiddle at the same time. Not even he was that brilliant. I am still in touch with Gari (now Gareth!) Williams - flute on Harvest Time - occasionally. Hope I won't be breaching copyright by playing Hill Climbing in Church this Sunday - you can hunt me down for the fee if necessary.
much love - Janet

I saw the Band at Bedford College of Education in 1973/4 and bought the Vinyl, which has sadly become lost over the years. I have the cd and have just purchased a another copy for a young friend of mine. I believe that Ruth Mourant had made the arrangements for the performance. I was lucky enough to meet Trevor on a couple of occasions after that when he was undertaking a teaching experience at the Bedford School. Thanks guys it is truly great music that I still listen to frequently.

I saw the band in 1974 at my school (Royal Hospital School near Ipswich) and thought they were brilliant. They only had the songs on the album so the encore was "Stranger....." again but just as enjoyable. The lads signed the albums we bought and we all went away happy. The lads went back to one of the boarding houses with some of the pupils and we were talking about the gig for the rest of the term.
I still play the album although I am transferring it onto CD to preserve the vinyl. Incidentally about 18 months ago I was offered £300 for the album by a dealer who said he could sell it to colectors in Japan and still make a good profit! Didn't sell it though.........

I saw WIWB at a gig in Cambridge sometime 75-78. The vinyl has made its way into mp3 for my own listening and I still play back or sing (or get others to sing far better) Stranger or Hillclimbing in services and youth events. Hillclimbing remains the best Christian song ever written! Its impact on me is still incredible. Thank you guys so much! www.pbthomas.com

Still very interested! Mark

Mark - further to my last post I think I may have played support to WIW at the gig you saw (if it was Jan 20 1975). I'd be happy to try and produce an mp3 or two of "Juliana" for you if you wish to e-mail me on jongarvey AT btinternet DOT com. I doubt that Ray would mind, though I've not spoken to him since 1978. He didn't even invite us to his 60th!

Posted by Jon Garvey in Devon @ 17:06 on Oct 17 2009

Just found this, so thought I'd remember myself (and the lovely Cynthia, who clapped between songs!) to you. Many happy memories of shared gigs from early 1972 on. Incidentally, I have two bootleg recordings of "Juliana". Could I sell them for a lot of money to augment my pension??
PS I never knew Ray was that old - obviously he only pretended to be a student at those sociology lectures.
