Gospel Roots

In our continuing series documenting the roots of Christian music we highlight pioneering gospel duo THE CONSOLERS.

Gospel Roots

When, a few years back, Christian music buffs were directing their "are they, aren't they?" questioning at Scottish folk pop geeks The Proclaimers one pointer was the inclusion of the song "I Want To Be A Christian" on one of the duo's albums. In fact, the song came not from the songwriting pens of Craig & Charlie, but from a duo who, though never to enjoy gospel music's richer pickings, were tireless gospel troubadours for three decades. The Consolers were a husband and wife duo from Florida - consisting of Brother Sullivan Pugh on guitar and lead vocals and his devout wife Iola singing harmony and sometimes lead. It was in Florida that they met and married.

From their base in Miami, they toured the south eastern states and in 1952/ 3 made their first recordings for local operator Henry Stone, as the Miami Soul Stirrers for Glory and as the Spiritual Consolers on DeLuxe. Late in 1955 they were signed by Ernie Young's Nashboro label and a long and successful relationship began.

The Pugh's very first release on Nashboro, "Give Me My Flowers", was a hit with gospel audiences. The opening line is more familiar in blues than gospel, most notably in a '30s recording by Peetie Wheatstraw, and is very likely proverbial in black culture. Appropriately, it's Sullivan Pugh's bluesy reverb guitar that immediately strikes the ear, instantly recalling the much better known (to white ears) Roebuck 'Pops' Staples.

Over the years The Consolers recorded 10 or more albums for Nashboro of which 'Give Me My Flowers' (1961) and 'Heart Warming Spirituals' (1963) were released in the UK on a twofer by Ace in 1991. Their earthy, spiritually direct songs struck a chord particularly with the rural gospel audience. Wrote Tony Heilbut in his book The Gospel Sound, "Their simple country approach stresses such sturdy virtues as humility (" If I'm Too High, Lord Bring Me Down"); kindliness (" Give Me My Flowers While I'm Still Living"); and mother love (" I'm Waiting For My Child To Come Home", "Every Christian Mother Surely Prayed For Her Child"), and made them among the biggest gospel record sellers after James Cleveland."

Nashboro's gospel operation never paid much attention to the possibilities of crossover; for one thing it was scarcely there in the '50s, but even in later years, when the Staple Singers were playing the Newport Jazz Festival and being boosted by Bob Dylan, the label - and, it would seem, The Consolers - were happy to keep addressing their black audience. However, in 1972 The Consolers performed at the Newport Jazz Festival. They were apparently well received. But afterwards they returned to recording for Nashboro and to touring the less glamourous, but more faithful, churches and auditoriums of the black gospel circuit. CR

The Consolers' music ministry was frequent in my home and church when I was growing-up. I loved it then and I love it now. It has inspired me to use my music gift from my heart from which God can trully speak to listeners.

While growing up in Hot Springs, Ark. with my parents (by their love) and siblings under God's grace; I was fed the Word and the gospel. The Consolers filled my heart then and now. Most recently, over 650 educators heard the song" May The Work I've Done Speak for Me" and Mr. Pugh truly rendered (solo -I suppose Mrs. Pugh is resting with the Lord) a heartwrenching version which is found on the DVD Gospel Legends - Malaco.

Thank God for them- those that serve Him.

I have listened to and enjoyed the Consolers all of my live. The were my mother's favourite. I still listen to them with intensity, while their distinct and unique music burns within my soul. I will cherish the Consolers for as long as I live. It was not easy for me to accept the news that Sis. Pugh has gone to be with the Lord, but I also realize that she is in a better place. The work she has done still speaks for her.

this is to yalonda johnson from philly. i, too, am from philly and i have also been on a long time search for that song by the consolers. i also know only the last line of the song (and the first: pray that i will remain in the spirit of the Lord). i wish i could know the title and i wish i could find that song--which used to open the sunday gospel program. i tried writing the two radio stations (WHAT and WDAS), but they are both now out of business. if you turn up any luck, please let me know!

Hello, I am in the process of getting an album with the song on it, "May The Work I've Done", made into a CD. Once I get the CD from the company that's doing this for me, I'll glady send you a copy. As for where to find the words of the song, I would suggest going to www.google.com and typing in the first line of the song, then typing the word 'lyrics'. Please keep in touch. God bless.

I was lucky enough to find "Lord Bring Me Down" at a record store three or four years ago. It is a regular part of my listening and devotional time. It brings back memories of when I heard them (and other wonderful gospel artists)on the radio. This recording is like gold to me. I use it to keep me centered and focussed on what is important in this life.

Do anybody know what CD/Album is "Will my mother know me there on" by he Consolers

Posted by Eve Jordan in Jackson, Mississippi @ 21:24 on Dec 27 2007

Songs and music by the Consolers bring us back to basics. I too, as many others, grew up hearing the distinct and unique voices of Sullivan and Iola Pugh of Florida. They were great then, and are even greater today, because we truly do understand the significance of their work. The words of their songs, in great part, has caused me to re-think my life, and re-dedicate my self to the service of the Lord!

Thank God for the Pughs, and may God continue to bless others who listen to the words of their songs; as the work they've done continues to speak for them!

Please do anyone know the words to I Am Waiting for My Child to Come Home. I have been searching all over for these lyrics. I remember my mother use to sing it when I was a little girl. It was hard trying to find out who song that song now that I know I just need the lyrics. I would be more than happy it means would be reliving my mothers past.

Thank You

WAITING FOR MY CHILD TO COME HOME

I was talking to a lady a few days ago, and these are the words she said...if you see my child somewhere as you journey here and there, tell him I'm waiting for my child to come home

I am waiting and waiting for my child to come ....I'm waiting and waiting for my child to come...if you can't come home will you please send me a letter, a letter would mean so much to me. yes it will

Lord my child may be somewhere on his sick bed Lord with no one there to rub his aching head...Oh yes Jesus

Lord my child in somewhere in some lonely jail Lord with no one there to post his bail, oh Lord..... listen if I only knew what town my child was in .... I'll be there on that early morning train, then no matter what's crime Lord you know this child is mine.... and I'm waiting for my child to come home.
