Tuesday 1st May 1990

Blink and you might have missed it. The release of 'Run Thru The Wastelands' by Cardiff duo ONE TO ONE was a gem. Tim Cockram investigates.

A.P. It really was a nice vote of confidence, not that either of us has a CD player.

Are you pleased with the results?

A.P. Yes we are really, no matter how long you spend on a project you would want to change something. Considering the time (two and a half weeks) and the budget then yes we are pleased. Very enjoyable.

D.P. A great learning process, working with musicians of the calibre that were there, seeing that they're human beings.

What are your feelings about being on a Christian label?

A.P. It's a bit annoying that one of the things you have to put up with in the Christian field is the distribution problem - if your friends at work want a copy then you have to explain about the little Christian bookshop etcetera but it's a step forward.

You have no hesitation in breaking the secular barrier?

D.P. The only hesitation is that it's quite scary. I don't think that we would be ready, even now, to go out to the majors. We're still developing. To be taken from the stage we're at to a big secular company with distribution and all that would probably make us bigheaded. We really haven't paid our dues. I'd rather feel that we'd earned it.

A.P. For starting off it's nice to start with people who understand where you're coming from faith-wise - it's like a nurturing. In a way it's Kingsway's aim to pick up people like us and then push them on to the majors at the right time.

'Run Thru The Wastelands' has been likened to Spandau Ballet's style. Are they one of your musical influences?

D.P. Off the record we sampled the whole of a Spandau Ballet album and did it backwards. Our fashions are heavily influenced by them - I have a Spandau Ballet pillowcase!

I will listen to virtually anything but I have a problem with thrash metal.

A.P. Allsorts really. If I hear a record on the radio I'm not particularly bothered who it's by or who produced it - if it sounds good then I like it and you get influenced by it.

Is it true you're as much influenced by Pinky and Perky as Spandau Ballet?

D.P. Yeah - I hope that's not a reflection on our music! (laughs) CR
