During 2016 a blade was used in a crime in the UK every 16 minutes and knife crime in Scotland soared by ten percent. Records show a rise of 45 percent over three years in knife crime victims who are under 18 as well as a rise in the number of young perpetrators. There has also been an increase in the number of young people aged 10 to 15 reporting knowing someone who carries a knife.

Recorded cases of children committing sexual offences against other children rocketed by 78 per cent in England and Wales between 2013 and 2016 according to Barnardo’s research. In total, there were 32,452 reports to police of alleged sexual offences by children on other children over the four year period – an average of more than 22 every day.

New research, commissioned by children’s charity Plan International UK, found that 85 per cent of those polled think that sex and relationship education (SRE) should be mandatory in state schools with 82 per cent agreeing that it should also be compulsory at faith schools. The survey, conducted among 2,007 adults, also found that those who received SRE at school, only 27 per cent found the classes informative.

A Bill introduced by a severely disabled Peer to end disability-selective abortion received near-unanimous support from Peers as it reached Committee Stage in late January. If Lord Shinkwin’s Abortion (Disability Equality) Bill amendment Is successful it will remove section 1 (1)(d) from the 1967 Abortion Act, which allows for abortion on the grounds of disability up-to-birth. The net effect would be that the 24-week time limit would apply to all babies regardless of disability.

Cannabis possession warnings and fixed penalty notices have more than halved in a four-year period, according to troubling new figures. The Times reported that figures from the Ministry of Justice found that the number of cannabis warnings fell from 72,172 in 2012 to 35,343 in 2016. In the same period, the total number of £80 fixed penalty notices for possession fell from 16,074 to 6,915.

More than 90 per cent of UK universities are restricting free speech, a shocking new report has found. The Free Speech University Ranking (FSUR), by Spiked magazine, states that 21 universities have banned speakers from attending debates or lectures in the last year. Twenty universities have also banned the sale of one or more newspaper on their campuses.
