African Bishops condemned the Anglican Church's stance on homosexuality yesterday and said that they would stop sending priests to be trained in countries where same sex relationships were accepted. The 300 Anglican bishops who met in Nigeria for the first African bishops convention said homosexuality was an "unAfrican" practice and warned that congregations would turn away from a church that condoned it..The Anglican Church in Africa currently receives almost three-quarters of its funds from the West, but bishops from Nigeria and Kenya have said they would refuse to accept financial support from American churches that did not share their views on homosexuality.The Anglican Church in Africa is growing at a faster rate than anywhere else in the world, with 17.5 million members living in Nigeria alone, and the issue threatens to tear the global church apart.

Most people believe the local pub is far more important to their community than the church, according to a survey published today. Just 14.6% of those questioned said the local church contributed most to the community in which they live, just ahead of the neighbourhood post office (11%) and behind the nearest shop (16.4%). The pub, in comparison, was considered the greatest asset to the community by 58.1% of the 1,300 adults in the survey.

The Archbishop of Canterbury was leading a summit of more than 50 Church of England Bishops today to discuss the homosexuality crisis in the Anglican Church. Dr Rowan Williams was jointly chairing the meeting behind closed doors at Lambeth Palace in London with the Archbishop of York, Dr David Hope. All 44 diocesan bishops and 10 suffragans had been asked to discuss the way forward, Lambeth Palace confirmed. They were discussing Octobers Windsor Report, which called for the consecration of gay bishops to be halted, among other things.

Recent research by marketing company Tickbox showed that young people have more faith in mysticism - which includes Kabbalah - than in the Church and the Bible. It found that nearly two thirds of 18 to 24 year olds believe in the power of horoscopes, also seen as mysticism, compared to just over a third who swear by the Bible. And while over 45s said they remain loyal to the Bible, with 71% saying they believed in it, half of those under 45 prefer giving credence to astrology.

A new drive to teach Islam in schools will be launched today. Education Secretary Charles Clarke has backed the move, organized by the Muslim Council of Great Britain (MCB). He said it was vital to creating "understanding" between different cultures. Resource packs prepared for schools will help overcome "barriers" to teaching Islam in schools.

Najaf is one of Iraq's biggest cities with a population of 600,000. It is a holy city in Shia Islam and a centre of pilgrimage, third after Mecca and Medina. The Imam Ali shrine is the burial place of Ali ibn Abi Talib, the 7th century founder of Shia Islam. Shia Muslims seek to be buried in the nearby cemetery, believing it to be the entry to paradise. Shia worship was severely restricted under Saddam Hussein.
