Dr. Moria Plant, professor of alcohol studies at the University of West of England and the country's leading expert on women and alcohol, says that given the levels at which young women are drinking in this country, prehaps more attention could have been paid to the issue of pregnancy and drinking.

The study of 580 children from birth to the age of 16 found that if their mothers drank even moderate amounts of alcohol their growth, behaviour, brain function and academic ability were affected.

In the UK, binge drinking accounts for 40% of all men's drinking sessions. Up to 150,000 hospital admissions a year are alcohol-related and alcohol abuse is estimated to cost the NHS £1.7bn a year.
There are 1.2m incidents of alcohol related violence and 97,000 cases of drink driving. Up to 17m working days are lost annually by alcohol related absense, costing up to £6.4bn a year, the government will say.
We are fighting a losing battle. The advertising budget alone for beers, wins and spirits is three times the amount spent on treating alcohol dependency enough to fund 170,000 detox places.

The number of new cases of sexually transmitted diseases hitting British Teenagers has risen by almost two thirds in five years.
More than 40,000 teenagers seek treatment every year, the equivalent to 160 each working day. The alarming increase, revealed by official figures,has coincided with the liberalisation of school sex education programmes.
Condoms and morning after pills have been handed out to children who have also been given highly graphic advise on sexual practices.
Critics said the figures were futher damning evidence that government sex education policy is a disaster.

Abuse can also have a devastating impact on children, in 90% of domestic violence incidents, children were in the same or next room. It's a total misconception when people say 'He may of abused his partner, but he was a doting father.' It has a direct effect on the children.

Last year Sir Bob Geldof, who has three teenage daughters, branded girls' magazines as 'offensive'for their obsession of sex. Sir Bob, 48, told the BBC2 programe 'Grumpy Old Men'..'There is something predatory because they are made by adult men and women.

A report on the BBC teletext news says that a survey of people's religious beliefs across ten countries suggests that the UK is one of the most secular nations in the world.
Research company ICM surveyed ten thousand people in ten countries, for the BBC's series 'What the World thinks of God'.
More than a quarter of the Britons surveyed thought the world would be more peaceful if nobody beleived in God. However, very few people in other countries agree.
The survey apparently found the highest level of belief in some of the poorer countries, and also in the USA- the richest country in the world.

At Festival Manchester last year there were six days celebration of 'faith, hope and life' as it came to a grand fanale the crowd was estimated by police at 30,000. 5,000 volunteer/ Delegates throughout the UK and Europe worked on over 300 service projects in some of the city's most deprived areas. Over four days, some 75,000 hours of work contributed to the clean-up, repair and upgrading of public and private facilities opn dozens of estates. On the final weekend, volunteers joined an estimated two day crowd of 55,000 who came to the park to enjoy major christian music artists and a varity of festival activities. It will leave a mark on the city as over 1,500 new believers made decisions for Christ during the week.
