Nearly two-thirds of doctors believe that patient safety has deteriorated over the past year, according to a report. The Royal College of Physicians found four out of five (80%) are worried about the ability of their service to deliver safe patient care in the next 12 months. The report found 64% of doctors believe that patient safety has deteriorated over the past year -10% higher than last year.

Nearly 40 per cent of all cancers diagnosed in the UK every year could be avoided through lifestyle changes, according to new research. Smoking is the biggest avoidable cause of cancer, followed by excess weight, overexposure to UV radiation from the sun and sunbeds, drinking alcohol, eating too little fibre, and outdoor air pollution, a study by Cancer Research UK found. Experts warned that obesity could overtake smoking as the biggest killer.

Scientists have developed a blood and urine test that can detect autism in children. Researchers at the University of Warwick said the test, believed to be the first of its kind, could lead to earlier diagnosis of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) in children who could then be given appropriate treatment earlier.

Public satisfaction with GP services has dropped to the lowest level since the 1980s, a survey has found. The British Social Attitudes survey found satisfaction with family doctor services - usually seen as the “jewel in the crown” of the NHS – fell to its lowest level in 35 years.

For the first year ever, more than 1,500 people in the UK have donated their organs after they died and this means that more people than ever have had a transplant to transform their life. Latest figures for the end of the financial year show there were 1,575 deceased donors during 2017/18, an 11% increase on the previous financial year. It is the highest ever number of donors in the UK. There were 162 more deceased donors than the previous year, the highest year on year increase in 28 years.

One in five Britons (19 per cent) has been approached about making a compensation claim for holiday sickness, according to new research. Travel trade organisation Abta commissioned the poll and warned that claims management firms are urging millions of people to make false claims. It said there has been a six-fold rise in UK claims since 2013. This is despite sickness reports in resorts remaining stable and travellers from other countries not experiencing the same issues.

The waiting list for a heart transplant has nearly trebled in a decade, the British Heart Foundation has revealed as it pleads for people listed as donors to discuss their decision with loved ones. NHS Blood and Transplant service figures show the number of people on the waiting list for a new heart in the UK has increased by 162% since 2008.

Freedom of Information requests to dozens of NHS trusts by Spurgeons showed that, while admissions to A&E for self-harm had gone up seven years in a row, as many as 60 per cent of children referred to mental-health services by their GP did not go on to receive any treatment.

Women are dying from ovarian cancer due to a lack of genetic testing that should be available on the NHS, experts are warning. Fewer than a third of women (29%) diagnosed with ovarian cancer are offered the BRCA test to check for genetic mutations, according to the charity Ovarian Cancer Action, despite Government guidelines saying all women with ovarian cancer should be tested to inform their treatment.
