OK, so take 18 songs from the history of spirituals, many standard "Swing Low", "Nobody Knows", some newer, but no less well known "secular gospel" opus penned by Curtis Mayfield "People Get Ready", and put them together acapella (voices alone). Simple eh? Well, not exactly, perhaps some of them already have "definitive" versions and for some maybe all possible variations have been visited. In this case the challenge is met in the innovative arrangements which are in general excellent. Maybe innovative becomes a bit too complex for my ears in a couple of cases. The singing is of course great, although once or twice I'd had enough of the unfortunate tendency to vocal gymnastics. So if you are looking for well arranged, modern, acapella versions of great spiritual songs then this is for you.
