Not the London group of this name which got considerable Cross Rhythms radio play recently, but a US group born out of a youth ministry in New Beginnings Church, Oregon, now signed to the Syntax Records label (run by pioneering group, Sackcloth Fashion). Acts 29 is made up of solo MCs Braille (who's debut solo release 'Lifefirst: Half The Journey', was lauded as one of the best Christian hip-hop releases by secular hip-hop reviewers), Soul Plasma and MC/Producer Ohmega Watts. Braille and Ohmega Watts also combine to form Return To Sender. Friends such as Othello from fellow Syntax labelmates Lojique, Ethic and various singers pop up all over this release to make it feel like family without detracting from the overall album. All three MCs (Braille, Ohmega and Soul) bring different styles to the table, from Braille's thought provoking intensity to Ohmega's multi-syllabic flow to Soul Plasma's incredible charisma, which makes this very interesting to listen to. Needless to say, you will not find trite lyrics on here. All three sound like (and are) sound lyricists talking on such down to earth topics such as the way our words reflect our lives on "Statements", to the tale of a young Christian's misadventure in dating a non-Christian hoping to get her saved in "Missionary Dater". The beats are handled primarily by Ohmega Watts, while Braille makes his beatmaking debut. The beats are memorable from the banging, almost DJ Premier-esque "Overnight" to the mesmerising production on "Statements" or "Deja Vu". This is aimed at new Christians, but can definitely be felt by everyone. A must buy.
