While we have categorized this CD as "classical" that is a bit of a misnomer. Certainly Andrea Bocelli is a classical operatic tenor and undoubtedly he can sing but here he is in crossover mode. It is well done, tuneful and his many fans will no doubt be pleased to hear it, especially as it has been some 14 years since his last album of new material. There are some classical touches, such as the guest appearance of the soprano Aida Garifullina on Daniel Vuletic's rather nice setting of "Ave Maria Pietas" and some borrowing in several other pieces. "Ali Di Liberta" tips its hat to Bach's "Suite No 1 in G major" for solo cello, "Un'anima" revisits a Pavane by Gabriel Faure and "Dormi Dormi" uses Bach's "Jesus Joy Of Man's Desiring" and while I had to check on one or two of these references all were pretty obvious when heard - and I am sure listeners to Classic FM will hear them too as the album is bound to be featured. Also of interest are some of Bocelli's other guests. He reunites with his friend Ed Sheeran after their chart-topping "Perfect Symphony" on a new song called "Amo Soltanto Te" written by Sheeran with lyrics by Tiziano Ferro, joins pop act Dua Lipa on the single "If Only", and master of the crossover Josh Groban for "We Will Meet Once Again". At the heart of the record is a duet between father-and-son, as 20 year old Matteo Bocelli steps into the limelight to duet with Andrea on "Fall On Me", a poignant song which reflects the bond between parent and child and if you have seen the recent Disney film The Nutcracker And The Four Realms you will have heard it. While this is not a classical release in the true sense of the word it is a pleasant listen for the uncommitted and no doubt Bocelli's legion of admirers will love this celebration of love, family, faith and hope.
