Signed to Word after their vice president saw them sing in the intimate surroundings of their own living room, Beyond The Blue's self-titled debut album combines the vocal talents of Marty Funderburk, Richard Kelly and Steve Smith. This is polished and exciting American pop music, a funky blue-eyed soul with the boys' harmonies very much to the fore. Horns are punchy, bass lines bobble, huge melodies pour forth so you can almost hear the dollars in this production. It opens with the irrepressibly up tunes "What A World" and "One Love" before the calm after the storm of "Reason For The Rain". Occasionally this has a Boys II Men feel about it and a very assured sound for a debut album. The other classy ballad is "I Know You Know" ends any doubt about this trio's vocal versatility. At the other extreme they revive the old O'Jay's classic "Love Train" in a respectable fashion. In America, these boys will definitely go the distance but over here, despite the excellence of production, singing, songwriting, I am left wondering whether us Brits can tell them apart from 4Him, Phillips, Craig And Dean, East To West and a host of other well produced talented CCM groups.

Wow!! what a ccm sound for the 90's; like many other ccm artists. This trio of guys sound great!! This cd of songs is very highly commendable!Amazing!!
The cd starter song "What a World" has that ccm style, so does the follow up song "One Love"; both are cd stand outs! Yes, I must agree with the above writer, that the group has similar sounding vocals as other ccm guy groups. How about the rendition of the 1973 song by the O'Jays, "Love Train"; it was
stupendous!! Great job on the song guys!! Who cannot relate to "Reason for the Rain"; how true rings the words of the chorus. I just luv the song "In the Key of Love"; Marty, Richard & Steve thank you!
Every song on this cd is worth complimenting!! "For the Sake of my Heart" is another cd favorite; just luv it!! "I Know YOU Know" was a catchy phrase; the ccm trio of Sierra also had a song by same title that was a radio fave this same year:another great song guys!
"Safe Thus Far" was great song to use as the cd closer song. I was sure hoping this trio of guys would have at least recorded another cd after this one. What are they doing now? anyone know??
GOD Bless! -Don
