Subtitled 'Spirituals, Hymns And Folk Songs', this is a unique work of art from two of jazz's most highly innovative and deeply respected contemporary musicians. The pairing of piano and bass, without accompaniment, on a programme of spirituals seems a dubious project, but in the hands of two master musicians the result is a major achievement. The selection includes 10 spirituals, a hymn medley, 'Spiritual' (a great Charlie Haden original) and 'L'Amour De Moi' and 'Danny Boy' to cover the folk songs department. Throughout, the duo are constantly creating exquisite harmonics, highly sophisticated textures and all that's wonderful about great jazz. A totally convincing feel for gospel roots runs through the set, tunes such as 'Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child' convey all the pain and pathos you can handle. A million miles ahead of any instrumental praise and worship album ever made, why not get a drop of the real stuff? An all-time great masterwork, essential listening
