Jim Lauderdale has been called a "natural born songwriter" by NME, and we find the evidence right here on his debut album. He is a professional song writer, (other people record his stuff) but on this collection of songs we find a rich powerful voice that sings a kinda 'soul country' style all his own. Not exactly a gospel album, yet wonderful songs like "Grace's Song" and "When The Devil Starts Crying" show some deep gospel roots. Trem guitars, foot-tappin' rhythms and gut wrenchingly good vocals make this a superb kinda country album. I say kinda country 'cause it's definitely country, but it's certainly more than that.
