Reviewed by Aaron Ferris Following on from an impressive debut album as well as developing a solid fan base in the US, Japan and beyond, American teenage rocker Krystal Meyers is back in action and with producer Ian Eskelin puts together just over half an hour of unyielding distorted power. The opener "Collide" is an ear pounding multi-rhythm anthem in which Meyers' belts out, "I want to be broken by you and made brand new," an opening chorus rubber stamping early on the desires of the heart behind the music. Following suit of artists such as BarlowGirl, Rebecca St James and Superchick, Meyers' assigns a track to tackle the subject of purity leaving listeners in no doubt that "love was made to wait" in the "The Situation". The power pop "Only You Make Me Happy" has a great positive vibe exclaiming, "My heart's on my sleeve/I don't care if I'm not in style," a song typifying the overall no messing about, get-straight-in-there approach of the album. The pace never relents until the poignant final track "Hallelujah" with even this developing as layers increase. Amidst the middle-of-the-road lyrical offerings by some of today's popular CCM artists, it is thoroughly refreshing to hear this young woman explicitly express her faith with the backing of powerful and credible music. Excellent.

Since the release of her self-titled debut album, seventeen year old Krystal Meyers has received awards, performed before more than 400,000 people, finished school and now completed her second album.
On Dying For A Heart, her second release, Krystal grapples with issues faced daily by her peers. The ambitious project continues Krystal’s message of ‘anticonformity’, encouraging young people to stand up for God’s plan for their life.
Tracks like The Situation delve into the struggle for purity in relationships while The Beauty Of Grace reminds that there is forgiveness for all. Krystal explains the message further, 'there are a few songs that are controversial, dealing with issues facing young people today. I want to write those songs to challenge the youth of my generation.' |
